headspace is the delivery partner of Be You for primary and secondary schools across Australia. Be You is a national initiative for educators, aimed at promoting and protecting positive mental health in children and young people.
headspace in Schools (formerly known as headspace School Support) continues to support secondary schools to prepare for, respond to and recover together where there has been a death by suicide.
As an educator, your response helps guide and support children and young people who may be thinking about or have been affected by suicide. Suicide prevention and response resources are available on the Be You website.

Schools strive to be safe, supportive and inclusive communities. Recognising the important role schools have in their communities in supporting the mental health needs of young people and their families, this initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, delivers face-to-face training and education sessions to staff, students, parents and carers.
Sessions can be tailored to meet school needs and are designed to complement the mental health and wellbeing framework of the school. These sessions are delivered onsite in secondary schools and at the invitation of the Principal.

At times Principals, Deputy Principals and school leaders are required to lead their school through traumatic and critical incidents.
This service funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training, offers school leaders in Queensland a non-judgmental and confidential space to have one-on-one supportive conversations, and equips them with the tools and strategies to support themselves, their staff and school during these stressful times. It is a free service for all Queensland State School Principals, Deputy Principals and school leaders.

Professional learning and training
The SAFEMinds in Practice and Suicide Risk Continuum Training packages are funded by the Department of Education and Training Victoria through the Enhancing Mental Health Support in Schools initiative. It assists students and Victorian Government school staff to build their capacity to better support students’ mental health, resilience and wellbeing through a range of tailored services.
SAFEMinds in Practice training is for all staff and aims to increase their foundational knowledge of mental health and emerging concerns. Suicide Risk Continuum Training is more specialised and focuses on identification, support and response to self-harm and suicidal behaviour in secondary students and is aimed at wellbeing coordinators, student support service staff, level coordinators and assistant principals.

Enhancing mental health support for SSS workforce
This initiative offers psychological support sessions for the Student Support Service (SSS) workforce including social workers, psychologists and speech pathologists. These one-to-one sessions are designed to improve self-care and personal wellbeing, reduce stress and cumulative harm for short-term concerns.
This support is currently available to SSS staff working within the Department of Education and Training Victoria.

headspace is looking at ongoing funding options to deliver skills-based training on suicide risk management for secondary schools, so there are no training dates scheduled.
We are seeking opportunities to speak with leaders from within the various education and government sectors to consider future opportunities. This is a valuable product in building the capacity of education staff and has been highly regarded to date, with several studies indicating that the package is effective in improving skills, confidence and attitudes in suicide prevention.
