R U OK? Day 2023

R U OK? Day, celebrated on the 14th of September 2023. Promoting mental health awareness and encouraging meaningful connections among individuals.

"R U OK", designed to prompt open and honest conversations about mental well-being.

This year's event focuses on the importance of human connection and compassion.

R U OK? Day seeks to break down the barriers of isolation and encourage people to reach out to friends, family members, colleagues, and even strangers, to check on their emotional state.

Everyone has the capacity to make a difference in someone else's life simply by starting a conversation with genuine concern and empathy.

R U OK? Day aims to foster a society where people feel comfortable discussing their mental health without fear of judgment, and where genuine connections and support are freely given. By asking the question "R U OK?" and listening with compassion, individuals can play a vital role in promoting mental well-being and helping others during difficult times.

Ways people can ask the question "R U OK?":

  1. Active listening: When you notice changes in someone's behaviour or mood, take the time to actively listen to what they have to say. Be present and non-judgmental, creating a safe space for them to express themselves.

  2. Be specific: If you're concerned about someone, mention the specific things you've noticed, such as, "I've noticed you've been more withdrawn lately. Are you doing okay?"

  3. Choose the right moment: Find a private and comfortable setting to ask the question, so the person feels at ease discussing their feelings.

  4. Show empathy: Let the person know that you care and that their feelings are valid. Phrases like "I'm here for you" or "You don't have to go through this alone" can be reassuring.

  5. Offer support: Be prepared to help them find resources, such as professional help or support groups, if needed. Let them know they don't have to face their challenges alone.

  6. Check back in: Remember to follow up with the person after your initial conversation. Let them know you're still there for them and that you genuinely care about their well-being.
